The Union yoga center was born of a passionate desire for a space to be a unique hub of self-awareness and self-healing, by offering these gifts of the yogic arts in an affordable manner. It is envisioned as a project to engage and enhance Toronto's dynamic culture as it lives and breathes within Cabbagetown as a neighbourhood.
This is a special area because it is alive with street traffic that is very diverse. However, as much as the sidewalk is a cosmopolitan sight, there are few places where these neighbours socialize together.
In essence, the studio is a social incubator, where playful evolution and empathy can integrate with daily living through physical and spiritual consciousness. It is a venue for stimulating growth and learning by stimulating interaction and connecting diverse networks of people who are already neighbours.
This philosophical liberation of the yogic arts from more traditional business models will inspire our fellows and selves to imagine the possibilities, and to act as agents-of-change.
The Union was created in December 2007 by Maggie O'Connor and opened on January 8th, 2007. Renovations included reusing and recycling instead of discarding. It is host to a beautiful living wall (a section of green plants) to help clean the air and create a connection with the functions and beauty of nature. With lots of sunlight, Victorian building details and reclaimed decor, the result has a very eclectic, modern and cozy vibe!
