Someone.ca presents Nuit Blanche 2008 & 2009 original prints

The Shore - This limited edition fine print broadside, first in a series of nine pieces in Someone's Water series, was produced for Cabbagetown's 2009 Nuit Blanche.

Cabbagetown resident and author A.F. Moritz won the Griffin Poetry Prize in summer 2009, and generously contributed his poem, 'The Shore'[Anasi] to begin Someone's Water series. Someone designed the work with illustration by Susana Wald and Deborah Barnett, to print 2 colours from photo polymer plates for Nuit Blanche 2009.

Seth Scriver's Opposites Attract - This limited edition fine print set of broadsides was produced for Cabbagetown's 2008 Nuit Blanche

Toronto's exhibiting gallery artist Seth Scriver created seven candid and humorous illistrations especially for Someone's original broadside series. The drawings were scanned and then reproduced on a range of fine papers from photo-polymer plates, in an edition of 350 copies. The display type was handset from lead and wood type, and together with the images, was designed to produce three pairs of Opposites and a title page. Twenty-six copies of the broadsides have been set aside for limited edition boxed sets, to be produced in 2010.

Reverberations - Creating images: Exquisite Corpse

Working together in Cabbagetown, Susana Wald and Deborah Barnett began their artistic collaboration, creating a set of 10 Reverberations. The series was inspired by the surrealist game Cadavre Exquis, where participatns write or draw in on a sheet of paper, then fold it to conceal what they've done, and pass it on to the next player for a further contribution. Apparently, Andre Breton, principal founder of Surrealism, remarked on the playful origins of the game, and later attested to it being an enriching experience - Susana and Deborah would agree.

Love Radiance Joy - a selection of fibre works by Kalyna Pidwerbesky

Kalyna Pidwerbesky is a Toronto-based fibre artisan who creates richly coloured fibreworks using handwork techniques. "Felt-making lies at the core of my work. The creative process of transforming individual fibres into a new composite cloth with the freedom to sculpt any shape and form is a joyful experience. The repetitive nature of handwork techniques like felting, embroidery and beading provide moment-to-moment opportunities for quiet reflection on the theme of transformation. I see every thread, bead and fabric as a line, a shape and a pattern of colour. Inspired by transitions in nature, the creative process, and spiritual philosophy this work is an offering of joy."

SANDRA SMIRLE

Pelouse Interdite: The grass is always greener somewhere or other, some other place. We are, after all, everywhere but here. After all is stripped away, woven together, torn down and reconstructed, this place is nothing but our own: a collection
of all we’ve been able to carry with us or drag behind us from some other place, and that which was left behind here for us. Let’s make this place ourselves – let’s put down a heavy foot, make us a big old thumbprint of the topography, let it become us. Go, mark this territory: it is nothing, but our own. Go on, walk the perimeter; it always circles back. We’re in orbit now, don’t you feel the gravitational pull of some better place other than here?

The increasing mobility and portability of a globalizing society propels our endless quest for some utopian place.

This exhibition is an exploration of that place – place as self, location, nature, memory and home. By deconstructing and recreating real geographies of personal importance, by fusing them with attitudes and ideas that are transferable from one
environment to another, I have made new places that feel closer to where I might want to be.

Winston Lau's Chairs

The chairs embody a period of time and history in our lives. We save and save to purchase our first piece of significant furniture. We throw parties, watch movies, spend our Saturday afternoons and so on.

While they rest curbside, I like to imagine these narratives within each chair before being discarded. In addition, abandoned, they embody aspects of life from the elderly, to the environment, to consumer culture to name a few.

• These pieces are for sale for $550

Jan 26 - Feb 15, 2008 The First Union

"The first month of the year always brings out a time of self-reflection and helps us to take stock of what we have been doing for the past year and what we want out of the next. January 2008 is the first anniversary of the Union and there is much to reflect on."

The artists showing here have reflected and revealed themselves in context of their own work, and identity: Christy Shapley (downward facing dog), Carmen Shroeder (Tile/Self-portrait), Ryan Marmoreo (Platters), and Kate Jackson (quilted soldiers).

  • Winston Lau www.chairs.carbonmade.com From the series: Chairs - Over the last little while, Winston Lau has been documenting discarded chairs around Toronto. The project started after a long break from street photography. In my Mr. Lau's mind, the chairs, like fleeting street scenes served as an excercise in looking, waiting and patience. They reflect untold memories and stories around living room conversations, parties and dinners.

  • J.J. Martyn - Artists Statement: "Watching a bump on a tummy grow into a walking (running + hockey playing), talking (singing + laughing) little boy is incredible. The amount that his memory retains blows my mind. My "What's In Grandpa's Pocket" series comes from watching him learn that Grandpa always has a toy car in his pocket. Dedicated to Lil' Joshua T. and Bill Woodgate." For more work please visit: www.jjmartyn.com
